Year-End Fund Drive: Thank You For Your Support

Your support of Tube City Community Media Inc. over the past two years has been outstanding. Thank you.

We have been helped by the G.C. Murphy Co. Foundation, the E.R. Crawford Trust, Finney Funeral Homes and many, many other people.

In the 12 months ending Nov. 30, 2017, we served 117,989 readers. That's a 79 percent increase over the same period one year earlier.

If you use this service, and you can afford to make a donation, we would be grateful for a contribution.

We are an IRS-recognized 501(c)(3) charity.

Donations may be made by check or money order to Tube City Community Media Inc., P.O. Box 94, McKeesport 15134; or via PayPal at: http://www.tubecityonline.com/contact/

Regardless of whether you can contribute money, THANK YOU for your continued support of the website --- we look forward to continuing to provide you, and Mon-Yough residents, with this service, otherwise free of charge, in 2018.

In 2017, we used your support to expand our coverage of White Oak news and add coverage of Duquesne and some local sports. We want to keep the momentum going, and we can only do so with your donations.

Best wishes for a safe holiday and successful new year!

Sincerely,
Jason Togyer
Executive Director and Board Member
Tube City Community Media Inc.

Directors: Doug Goffus (chair), Jennifer Sopko (secretary), Alycia Bencloski (treasurer), Andi Cartwright, Bob Janis, Dan Malesky, Mike Mauer, Judy Rosenfeld, Tom Schroll Jr., the Rev. Chris Stillwell, Jason Togyer.

Why are we asking for money?

When we launched the McKeesport Obituaries website on the day after the Daily News closed, we promised to make sure the site was free to the readers, and we didn't want to charge funeral homes for posting obituaries.

We did that because many people in the Mon Valley are on fixed incomes; and because many people are cutting back on funerals, which is hurting funeral professionals.

We do make some income on digital advertising --- it's up to about $5 per day --- but it's not enough for us to grow, or even build up any kind of a fund for expansion.

Do people read our websites?

Yes! A lot of people, in fact.

In addition to the nearly 118,000 people who visited McKeesportObituaries.com in the past year, readership of The Tube City Almanac is up 21 percent (64,955 readers) and listenership to our Internet radio station, WMCK.FM, is up 47 percent to 5,305 listeners.

What will we use the money for?

We use any donations collected to add and improve news coverage. In 2017, we beefed up our coverage of White Oak and added coverage from Duquesne, as well as some sports stories.

In 2018, we want to cover local elections and add, maybe, one other community.

But it's all done with donations, and it takes time --- we have no financial backers or investors.

It's just you, and us, together, getting the job done!

Congratulations to the October Winner of the Caregiver Excellence Award!

The BEINHAUER CAREGIVER EXCELLENCE AWARD for October was presented to Wendy Ackman of Seven Oaks Hospice.
During a staff meeting at Seven OaksWendy was surprised with this award. Among the many outstanding nominations we’ve received over the past year,Wendy’s nomination is, so far, the most imaginative of all! Part of it reads, “Who can take a sunrise, sprinkle it with dew, cover it in lotion and a smile or two? — The Wackman, the Wackman can, the Wackman can, cause she mixes it with love and makes the pureed taste good. Who can take a rainbow, wrap it in a blanket, soak it in the sun and make a toastee patient smile? –The Wackman, the Wackman can, the Wackman can, cause she mixes it with love and makes the pureed taste good …!”
Wendy is patient and kind and has a special way about her. Patients adore her and families trust her. She has a true gift of making patients feel good about themselves and giving them the gift of laughter, collecting all the tears, as it were.
Wendy was presented her award by Katie Brandt, Beinhauer’s Community Outreach Director.  —  Congratulations,Wendy!

USING LIFE INSURANCE MONEY TO PAY FOR A FUNERAL

There are many options when paying for a funeral service.  Some families plan to use life insurance as a means to pay the costs of your funeral. At Beinhauer’s, we offer many options by which you can pay for a funeral at the time of death, as well an irrevocable trust for those who would like to pay in advance.  A life insurance policy, may, in some circumstances, be used at the time of a loved one’s death to pay for a funeral.

Life InsuranceA life insurance policy may start at $10,000 and mature to a greater value over time, yet there is no guarantee that there will be enough value at the time of death to cover all funeral costs.  If there are excess funds, the estate of the deceased will receive a check for the remaining balance of the insurance.

Remember that with life insurance, the owner may have taken out loans on the policy, thus leaving less than the face value to pay for the funeral.  It is also possible a policy owner stopped paying on the premiums, or the policy lapsed. Whatever the case, it is important to discuss any insurance policies with your loved ones to ensure that a life insurance policy’s value is enough to cover the type of funeral or cremation service that you desire.

A life insurance plan comes with premiums that must be paid, in some cases, for the remainder of your life. These premiums may not be cost effective for your budget. It may be better for you and your family to cash out the policy and pre-pay directly at the funeral home.  Beinhauer’s can tell you exactly how much you will need to fund the type of services you want.  Additionally, pre-paid funerals at Beinhauer’s come with the peace of mind of a price guarantee.  Contact us today at 724-941-3211 to speak with one of our pre-need specialists.  We can help you and your family decide what type of funding and plan is right for you.

WHAT TO KNOW ABOUT CHOOSING A CREMATION URN

Cremation is a popular choice over a burial in a funeral ceremony in today’s modern society. 70% of people choose cremation today and cost is a primary factor. While a cremation may be more reasonably priced, the urn you choose as your final resting place can vary wildly in price, according to material and style. The amount of money spent on the cremation urn is completely up to the consumer.

Consider the style of the urn, where the urn will be placed and kept, once the cremation is finished, if the material of the urn is man-made or natural: the answers to these questions will help to decide the style that you will in your urn.

Following are some popular choices in urns, different ideas that are lovely and effective, each of them in their own way.Cremation Urn

  • Metal Urns are made of copper, pewter, steel, bronze, and brass. These durable urns can be taken home to be displayed or buried at the site.
  • Cultured Urns are made of man-made products bur made to look like wood, bronze, granite, or marble. These urns can be easily molded into different shapes since they are mad of synthetic materials.
  • Quarried Urns are a beautiful natural choice to take home or left at the burial site. These are made from natural stones, including marble, quartz, granite, onyx, slate, alabaster, and fossil stone. None of these urns are alike and come from all corners of the world, thus, are a pricier option.
  • Cast Bronze Urns are a unique way to create a memorial piece, one of a kind, through casting via an artist who is sculpturing the urn. This material is quite durable and another good option to display at home or at the grave site.
  • Wood Urns can be made from almost any type of wood, again, a unique piece to be used to display at home or in a cemetery columbarium.
  • Glass or Ceramic Urns are created through glazing, coloring, firing, and glass blowing, numerous artistic processes that lead to a very delicate and unique piece of art. This urn would be displayed at home or in a cemetery columbarium.
  • Earth Friendly and Environmental Urn breaks down overtime and biodegrade into the earth.

There are so many choices that finding an urn that fits your budget and style, the unique personality of you for your pre-planned funeral, or for your loved one; this should not be a difficult task, but since there are so many choices, let the professionals at Beinhauer help with you to work this detail out. The cost of the urn will ultimately depend on the style and materials used. The more complex the design, the more expensive the urn will be.

Caregiver Excellence Annual Awards Banquet

This past year, the Beinhauer Family began a Caregiver Excellence Award Program for hospice caregivers who provide dedicated, unselfish care to hospice patients.

Each month, a candidate is selected from the nominations received either from their peers or through families they have served.

All monthly award winners were invited to join together for a festive Annual Awards Banquet, during which the Grand Prize Winner would be selected.

The Awards Banquet took place on Wednesday, November 8, at the Capstone Grill in McMurray, PA. The Beinhauer Executive Team and several funeral directors joined the winners and their guests for a time of celebration and encouragement.

In a special twist of fate, the Grand Prize winner whose name was drawn turned out to be one of only two monthly winners who were unable to attend the November 8 event….. And the reason he was away was that he was on his honeymoon! How fitting that a “Downtown Date Night” (the Grand Prize) will await him and his bride upon their return to Pittsburgh!

The Beinhauer Caregiver Excellence Award for hospice caregivers continues to be awarded every month, with another Annual Awards Banquet planned for next November.

Bertha Mae’s Sunday School class at the former First Presbyterian Church of McKeesport studied Elton Trueblood’s “The Company of the Committed” which inspired her to pursue an effort to meet the needs of mentally handicapped pre-schoolers in the McKeesport area.  This study culminated in the founding of what ultimately became known as the McKeesport Pre-School for Exceptional Children.  As its first teacher and director beginning in 1962, she worked tirelessly to secure funding and develop an unparalleled professional program that eventually outgrew multiple sites.  In the late 1990’s she worked with her board of directors and architects to envision, fund, and erect a new home for the preschool on Long Run Road in White Oak.  The name was changed at that time to the Long Run Children’s Learning Center.

In 1998, shortly after the completion of construction, she retired, having lead the organization for 36 years.  That same year, she was honored by the Chatham College Alumnae Association as its Distinguished Alumna of the year.  Later that year, the McKeesport High School Alumni and Friends Association selected her as one of 7 recipients for their Hall of Fame, recognizing her contributions to education and her passion and love for these special needs children.

Throughout her life, she was surrounded by and cultivated in a deep Christian faith that served her well and which she shared unapologetically in countless ways with unknown numbers of people in need or in crisis.  She honored her Savior, Jesus Christ and set an example for many in her family and community.  Many times she speculated about eternal life by saying “if only those in heaven could come back and tell us how wonderful it is…”  She never feared the end of life, but instead looked forward to the reunion with loved ones with whom she is certainly celebrating today!

Friends will be received in the Hunter Funeral Home, Inc., 1600 Coursin Street, McKeesport, PA  15132 on Tuesday, November 14, 2017 from 2-4 & 6-8 PM.  A service will be held Wednesday, November 15, 2017 at 11:00 AM in the Mount Vernon Cemetery Chapel with The Rev. Lynn Portz officiating.  The family suggests contributions to Shadyside Presbyterian Church.

August Beinhauer Caregiver Excellence Award Winner

The BEINHAUER CAREGIVER EXCELLENCE AWARD for August was presented on October 4 to Tracy Rongaus, nurse at Interim Hospice. Congratulations, Tracy!

Tracy was nominated as a truly excellent caregiver because she is known to ensure that all patients receive the utmost care. Recently she worked with a widowed patient in his nineties, as he faced his growing inability to take care of himself. During multiple visits, Tracy brought favorite snacks, PJs, slippers, and the most precious gift of all – her time and her presence. She was with him in his final hours.

The August Award for Excellence was handed to Tracy by Katie Brandt, Beinhauer’s Community Outreach Director. Due to scheduling difficulties in September, this awards ceremony was only taking place now…Which means that we’re not long away from the announcement of the winner of the prize for September!

The Beinhauer Caregiver Excellence Award, newly awarded each month, consists of a $50 Visa gift card and a certificate, along with an entry into the drawing for the Caregiver Excellence Award of the Year.

All area hospices, as well as the families they serve, are encouraged to nominate an excellent caregiver for next month’s award!

It’s quick and easy to fill out a nomination form, and it’s free!

For a nomination form or for more information, please go to http://www.beinhauer.com/caregiver-excellence-award/ , or email Katie Brandt at kdb@beinhauercares.com.
